New edge sander

Post by nektai »

I am going to try to post a picture for the first time while I show off my new Oakley H-6 edge sander. This one did not need much work but I still had to poke around the inside of it and as a result I can highly recommend it to all Junkies. My only complaint is that the drive drum should be taller to accommodate an 8" belt, as you can see the platen could handle it.

don't you need extra platen space if the 6" of belt is oscillating up and down?

drum size

Post by mr douglas t »

hello Nico,
I see the problem with the drum/ paper size. It looks as if the front drum can handle another 2 inches. Just run 8 inch paper and let it ride high on the motor drum. I often track the paper on my sander high to sand on an unused portion of the paper.

guzziguy has the right idea  , the paper uses the extra idle drum space during oscillation, kipish

The way that it breaks down is like this; the idle drum has room for the upgrade, so does the platen, the problem is the drive drum that is exactly 6". I wonder if they did offer an 8" version and just swaped out the drive drum? I am not going to do anything about it but it is fun to think about.

dadude, could you recommend another forum for the other 6" to 8" problem?

hello Nico, What is the ovwerall lenght and width of your H 6. I have a line on one and was wondering if it will fit in the space of my existing sander. Also how heavy is it? It looks to be at least 1000 lbs.

Mr Douglas T,

The machine measures 76" from the edge of the contour sanding table to the end of the dust port. I noticed that many of the H-6 are missing the contour sanding table because you can shave about 3" off the length by removing it. I would say about 6" could be shaved off of the dust hood side by re working the 4" port from horizontal to vertical.

The H-6 is 24 1/2" wide. If you were to remove the back table you could shave about 1 1/2" off the width.

I am not sure about the weight but 1000 -1200# is a good guess. I have the fabricated base which ended up being heavier than I had estimated to the shipping company (I will look for the receipt to get an exact number) I would think that the cast iron version would be a bit heavier.

Let me know if you need more information or pictures

thankyou Nico for the info. I do not want to get too excited aout the sander, as there is a lot of ifs between now and having it. Seeing yours sure does make me crave on. It is however hard to upgrade from the "Ford" edge sander. I will keep you all informed
