A friend of mine is setting up a router table, I thought I might forward his question to all of you.
I am going to buy a router wing for my table saw and a new router (I have a small router 3/4 hp that can't use 1/2" bits). Do you recommend a fixed base model or a plunge router for the router table and how much hp do I need?

Best case buy the plunge router 3 -1/4 HP
second best buy a plunge base and the Porter Cable 2HP
don't be penny wise and pound foolish. anything smaller and you will not be able to use any of the larger bits.
Something to consider, router bits larger then 1-1/2" diam. should turn at a slower speed. Think about a variable speed router.

There is the Bill Keyser system. Take the pin out of a spiral adjusting router base and use a car jack to precisely raise and lower....
Also the Dewalt (I hate them but this is slick ) router has a rack and pinion to raise and lower.
Like captain Kirk says the more power the better , but honestly it boils down to what kind of work you are doing, for just rounding over tenon stock and light routing, any old router will do. For heavy duty frame any panel door manufacture, you will only be happy with a big 3hp or greater goat.
