Blade Guard for 16" Northfield Jointer

Post by buck shot »

Well, we had a little accident - one of the guys in my shop lost a bit of his fingertip - it wasn't great, but it could've been MUCH worse. He did just barely clip the artery, but didn't hit bone or even nail. Regardless, it sucks, and I need to make sure this doesn't happen again, in whatever way I can.

So - I need to put a guard on this thing, pronto. A new guard from Northfield is around $400. A small price to pay, I know, but it's still $400.

Anyone know of a likely place to find a used one?

(and Kirk, since I'm sure you must be dying to know - it was Heavy D. He's gonna be fine, but he's not going to be playing guitar anytime this month, and he's a little shook.)

Hey Scott,
Sorry to hear about the accident.

The only two places I would try are Plaza Machinery in vermont, and Bill Kerfoot Conowingo supply in Oxford PA. Plaza might have something, Bill has been producing machine parts and large jointer guards might be just the kind of item he figured out a solution to.

This being said, $400 isn't too bad for a OEM part. Is the Northfield guard a nice piece? It probably is beneficial to have the true factory guard on the machine.

Also try Ben Rock in Dekalb. Pleasant Street Machinery. I have bought some used parts for my #4 from him.

Scott,
Do you need the whole assembly or just the guard (pork chop)? I have a Northfield 16 I'm working on that has a broken bracket for the guard. The rest of it is serviceable. I plan to replace the entire assembly with a new one from Northfield. I won't need the existing guard, so it's available.

thanks, all. I'll try all of those, but first:

Arthur, it is basically the pork chop - it's broken and has been 'fixed' with two thin plates that are no longer doing the job.

what would you sell yours for?
