Emery cloth/paper etc

I recently bought another old press, a fairly simple chuck of cast iron. Reading one man's description of how to prepare it for use, he suggested working on the platen with emery paper, aiming more to clean and polish.

So, emery paper... What's the reason for using emery paper versus emery cloth versus other forms of sandpaper?
