Hammond Glider Belt Tightness

Post by Daninvan »

Been happily using my restored Glider now for several projects. Although there is no slipping, the belts seem a little loose and tend to bang against the guard.

I notice that there is a single bolt with a spring on it that seems to hold the motor in place, yet still allows a little movement presumably for startup and shut down. Wondering if there is any way to tension it up a bit so the belts stay just a bit tighter.

Dan, The floating motor was a design element on the G4's and G4b's. The G100's have a fixed motor mount.

I have had good success by removing the bolt, tapping the hole is goes through and putting in a bolt which applies pressure permanently, thus eliminating the spring.

It has been a while since I did this, but that is what I recall doing, unfortunately I do not have great specifics. I do believe I used a bolt with an acorn nut on the end and I think they had done the same in order to prevent the corruption of the threads.

Please post if you tackle this with your results. I am sure others are interested to do this modification as well.

Thanks Pete, I wonder if I can use a skinny bolt to go thru the hole, and secure it with a nut on both sides of the hole. Avoid threading the hole that way. Worth a try, I'll see if I can dig up a skinny bolt somewhere.

Cheers,

Dan
