Hammond bearing preload

I am just re-installing my modified shaft and need advice on the bearing pre-load: how much (axial) play should there be between the inner cylindrical spacer and the bearings with the shaft removed. At disassembly it seemed like there was about 10 mil play - which would be taken up when I tighten down the dounle pully
