Flooring project

Post by mystry_tour »

Ok Guys heres the deal. I will be putting a new floor in my old house next week. The floor in it now has no sub-floor in it. I will be haveing that floor sanded flat. The house is over 150 years old. I will put tongue and groove ply over the old floor and then re-floor the 3 rooms. I have all the tools to make the flooring I just have to buy the wood.
Heres the question: I want a medium dark wood and I will face nail it with rose-head cut nails. Give me some medium dark woods that will be hard enough for a floor. I will probley use a polermerized tung oil to finish it.

how about jatoba? very hard, favorably priced, and nice looking.

Are you planning on cutting the T+G yourself? do you have a molder?

I have a Fay and Egan 525 lightning Shaper. I don['t know what jatoba looks like or the price of it.
The sander will be here Thursday to sand the floor. Not even sure where I can get about 800 B/F of that Pete

tour,

do you run blanks on edge, ganged thru planer for sizing? without a molder flooring is tough to insure consistant size, shaper set ups without a feeder (even with feeder) will allow blanks to vary enough to make a difference for flooring, straight, sized blanks are the key to shaper made flooring... trust me, been there!

Hey Dude.
I run them through the sander on edge to get consistant sizes and they still get a bit off as far as 90 deg. gos. I do have a feeder for the shaper though. I migh just buy the wood and plane it have a local shop toungue andgrove it for me. Not that much to do it that way. I have a little Millbury Dude that dose really well. But if you give me a number I will keep it in mind if someone wnats the Millbury for the right price.
