bandsaw

Hi all,

I have a question about bandsaws. I am in the interesting position of being able to purchase some equipment, initially a bandsaw, for a tiny but slowly growing wood program.

I had my eye on a 36" American Yates for approximately 3500-4000$, but I am now being asked to look for a cheaper one.

This machine will be used most often by beginning wood students, but I would like something that can accomodate big material, resawing, and most importantly student abuse.

Does anyone have thoughts on particular machines or places to look?

Hey Leah, Welcome aboard. Where are you located these days? This could help in recommending a dealer to find a saw.

I don't know of any saws available right now, but will keep an eye out. What would the price range be that you can spend?

I am in Normal...thats right, good ole Normal, Illinois (Illinois State University). Its actually quite lovely out here in the middle of corn country.

I am about two hours south of Chicago. As far as price goes, that is a bit tricky. I am not exactly sure how much money I can spend. I think I can justify spending upwards of 3500-4000$, if the machine is reliable, good quality, etc. So I am still thinking about that American Yates, I just wanted to see if there was another bandsaw of similar quality that might be a little cheaper.

There's Lost Creek Machine Tool in Ottawa and Pleasant Machinery in Dekalb, both of which are fairly close to you.

this one looks pretty sweet, make sure whatever saw you buy for that money has disk wheels- no spokes. also a brake is pretty important in an industrial setting. Also I would imagine it could be had for less than the asking price....
