Machine Adventure

Post by crzypete »

I bumped into a listing on Craigslist late yesterday afternoon and at 5:00 on saturday it was suddenly time for an adventure. I picked up guzziguy on the way to what turned out to be a closed down catholic home for the mentally ill.

here is the craigslist ad which piqued my interest:

Yes, the saw on the left is a delta Unisaw for $35

Yes, we were the first ones on the scene.

Yes, it came home.

Yes, there was some other stuff in the truck as well.

When we first showed up we actually had to sign a waiver in order to enter the condemned building. The shop was down in the basement and in rough shape. Crap everywhere. We scrounged around and came back with some nice goodies.

I bought the Unisaw for $35, a nice slowspeed stanley bench grinder for $20, and a bunch of small stuff like a metal handpunch, rosewood stanley brace and what not for an additional $5 bringing my total for the day to $60. I almost bought the other saw in the ad, but didn't feel like loading it..... four steps out of a basement.

Guzzi made out quite well as well. He bought a newish shopvac, a bench vise and two beautiful antique stanley levels for $12. The seller even through in a pencil sharpener on the house.....

Pics of the bounty later.

The unisaw will make a nice "contractors" saw when you are building the new shop!

good score

After a little 409 and a bit of elbow grease:

It cleaned up surprising well with little effort. Not bad for $35. It's too bad about all the paint splatters and the rust on the bottom, but who am I to complain. I regret not putting a better effort into finding the dust cover- it would have really completed the saw.

Nektai, definitely will make a deluxe job site saw, and after that, perhaps a basement saw for the house, or maybe I can get my money back

In the continuing Saga of this little adventure.....

At some point in this saws life someone wanted to extend the rails on the fence to increase capacity. They used materials that were easy to find, in this case, copper pipe. I went to the scrap yard today, the copper pipe from the saw was worth $17.50. And no I didn't go junking just for that pipe, but it made me smile when I thought about how it calculated into the price.
