Re: Miter Guage Not Square With Blade

NO, you have it backwards, you knock them up. This thread was more talking about the taper pins that hold the bearing block for the motor in place. Those are a weird system. When removing the fence, often the pins are stuck in the fence and you can lift the fence and pins at the same time. Remove th...

Re: Serial Number Registry?

Hi Jeff, I have monitored serial numbers for years. I was less interested in who had what and more tracking when they made all of the models. I have it posted in my Hammond guide, http://machinejunkie.com/new/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=165 I have done a decent job of keeping it updated as I find new da...

Sorry for the late reply. The rings allow you to position the blade perfectly centered in the blade slot. So, that is why they are moveable. you need to find the sweet spot to locate the blade properly.

Congrats on the saw! Not sure what grease zerks you are seeing, perhaps on the motor? DOn't grease the ways. Just makes a mess. My experience is cleaning and cleaning again is the best solution. The G4's are bit more finicky in terms of noise, possibly a tweaked ball retainer. Pretty easy to pull th...

Here's what they mixed for me. I meant to paint one of my fingers, but never got around to it. the sample was a great match though. This is the lighter green of the G100.

Looking good! Glad you got it apart!

I had a custom match made by sherwin williams. Used their oil based enamel. I'll spray it from a gun or brush it depending on my mood and the parts to be painted. I can photograph the formula on the can if you want.

perhaps the belt you have chosen is too long? My memory of the G3 is pretty fuzzy. Pete

Yes, Two belts are normal on all the floor standing Hammonds. I Couldn't tell you what size belt you need, best to measure and order 3 times until you get it correct (that is how I always seem to do it.) Please report back with the size you find for future owners to reference. As for tension, I pret...

Yes the 3450 motor will work, but You'll want to alter the pulley size. You can speed up the sfpm of the blade a bit, but you don't want to double it. I've never experimented with what is the ideal speed. I suspect there is a wide range of choices as wood just isn't that finicky to cut. Both of my s...

Those are nice looking saws and the history is way cool. You are well off to keep the bench glider as is is the most desirable of the lot. ( I only see three saws in the photos you posted. The other Two sas I see are both Ben Franklin's which simply do not command the same money or allure as the gli...

put the left side screws back in, they simply allow you to adjust the tension on the table. once the stop is removed, you need to "bump" the table towards you several times. The balls will start falling out and eventually you will have a quite heavy table in your hands. Reverse the procedu...

Congrats on the saw, bummer about the damage. Without seeing your issue, I think your best bet is to braze, silver solder or weld the broken pieces back together. It's a long search to find a parted out G3, also would need to know whether it is the early style G3 which raises and lowers the motor on...

I have enough experience to give feedback on the difference of hardened ways versus the cast iron ways. There is an enormous difference. On a G4 without hardened ways, you can almost always lift the table. Even after you tighten the ways a bit there are issues. Because you cannot equally tighten bot...

That's amazingly close on serial numbers. Perhaps this is a true cutoff line, but I suspect the answer is more perplexing. My instinct is that either Hammond was offering it as an option (less likely) or they were doing it as a repair/retrofit. The steel inset ways definitely came back for good with...

There are a couple of things that could be happening. Best to determine where the issue is before trying to figure out a solution. 1. If the blade holding unit has come out of whack, you will be cutting a cove essentially. Test for this with a indicator on the moving part of the table and see if the...

I’ve never been into an Oliver shaper, but you want to be extra careful in there as the bearings are most likely very expensive abec 7’s. I’d be hesitant to go in there for no reason and would prefer to drop the whole machine at his place and let him blue it and fit it in place.

Never done it myself, but seen a few done. While I appreciate the concept of going through the front where the cart goes in, functionally, that would annoy me. I'd be bumping into that hose with my feet and looking at it constantly- even more ugly than simply cutting a hole in the back of the saw. O...
