I used an idea from Guy Lautard: http://lautard.com/casters.html
though using different casters.

[quote="crzypete"]Dan, I'll buy that, I have a saw that could use it.

Dag nabbit! Why wasn't I paying attention!?

If anyone else happens to have a spare batter gauge, I'd be interested.
Indeed, I'd be happy to give Pete a profit on his new one...

Thanks,

Emery cloth/paper etc

I recently bought another old press, a fairly simple chuck of cast iron. Reading one man's description of how to prepare it for use, he suggested working on the platen with emery paper, aiming more to clean and polish. So, emery paper... What's the reason for using emery paper versus emery cloth ver...

sliders are safer!

I tend to think my Hammond Glider is safer than an ordinary tablesaw. I fix the work on the sliding table, typically using the workholding clamp. Then I slide the entire table past the blade. My fingers are never close to the blade. Compare cutting some small part on an ordinary table saw. Of course...

Mine has the same HPN, so I guess mine's the same vintage as yours. Makes sense, with the numbers so close.

It's 3072. Does that give us any hints about the age?

Thanks

Here's my steam generator. http://www.clcombat.info/Images/Haven/gen2.jpg My aunt won't let my uncle work on the boat directly, so he built me the generator. The entire steel box is heated and water is added from a hose. It's supposed to be a flash boiler. Water drips onto the bottom (a thick steel ...

These approaches to lamination all look good. But steam bending's not so very difficult either. Certainly easier than $1000/bend implies. I've done it several times for a boat. I was bending modest pieces (1 sq inch oak), but the technology certainly works for larger stuff. It was always a minor adv...

Now you tell me! But then, I guess it wouldn't have made a difference... We were gonna move it anyway.

Got it all reassembled last night, ready for the Christmas party this weekend (don't you show off your new toys at Christmas?)

A friend came over this weekend and we got the saw moved down into the basement, where among other virtues, it's dry and warm. I began by removing the accessories, the sliding top, and the motor. Then we attacked it with a hand truck, but it still seemed too heavy. So we pulled the saw off the base ...

Got it. And amazingly enough (this is probably a first in my own personal life), it went back together easier than it came apart.

plastic coating

My saw has a (the remains of) a layer of some sort of plaster coating. Not over the entire saw, but at least under the sliding table. It's cracking and coming away on bits, exposing the iron underneath. Much thick than ordinary paint. Is this stock, or something that was added along the way? Preston

removing sliding table

OK, so how do I get this thing off?
There's a stop near the front (approximately triangular cast-iron part held in place by two Allen-head bolts). I thought that'd do the trick, but no joy. Am I missing something easy?

Thanks,
Preston

It's actually the wood blocks that convinced me to buy the saw. They are locked up in a form with all the lead type, and if they aren't...

Thanks. I'll see what I can do.

On a different note, I'd like to use mine as it was intended, to support printing. But I lack a few parts, especially the trimmers and the bits associated with setting them. Is it possible to get them somehow?

Thanks,
Preston

a G4 in my garage

I bought a G4 today. Looks good so far.
I need to clean it up and move it (probably piece at a time) down to the basement.

Good looking forum. Thanks for all the info.
