OT: can anyone identify this machine?

Post by noah »

Can anyone help me identify this old winch. Any ideas? Is it worth $150?

Hey Noah, Welcome.

You have the code correct, but the link needs to be to a photo and not a page- You may have private photo hosting, and need to link directly to the picture to get it to show. I see nothing even when I follow the page and I am not waiting for their free download option.

The Problem is with your photo host, good instructions are here:

Is that a winch? I thought it was a boat anchor :P

Hey Noah, I have no idea on the value, but if it is valuable, the condition would not scare me. It looks dirty and used, but not heavily rusted. $150 does seem a bit steep, but I have no idea as to the actual value. You can always offer less.

Only the potential condition of the cable would scare me. I'd hate for it to either snap under tension if you were hauling logs, or alternately, part at your mooring and let your boat drift away.

If you are ever cutting cable like that, particularly stainless, nothing works quite as well as a good cold chisel and a 2-3 lb hammer.

I'd say my felco cable cutters would work particularly weller

I concur about the cable, but it is replaceable. Again, no value to gage against, but I am sure that the winch pictured would clean up just fine. I wouldn't touch it if I could buy a clean one for $300, but if it is an $800 used unit- you got something there.

Go to eBay and report back with some research.....

old winch

Found out it's a six ton Ramsey off an old tow truck. I'm trying to figure out how to attach it to the back of my case 830 tractor (for when I need it to stay put in the lake.) Maybe mount it on the drawbar. Anyway the owner says he'll throw in 300-500 feet of unused cable for total of $200

I don't think there's a voltage issue... Looks PTO driven from here...

Price replacement aircraft cable at McMaster... Just make sure you're sitting down at the time... Last time I needed some 1/8" in a hurry, it was right around $0.50 per foot... And you're not playing with 1/8" with this winch...

Half inch cable is generally available surplus for ~$1/FT. That winch probably won't take much more than 100'.... so all things considered, it's not too bad. Trouble with these things is that it's hard to tell what condition the gearbox is in without running it or cracking it open. If it's real cheap, you can grab it and take your chances. Otherwise, I'd recommend a good inspection/test.

Didn't I say I know nothing?????

I do know that cable is referred to as wire rope- I actualy buy quite a bit of stainless wire rope for my furniture- you can search this on mcmaster to get an idea of what is available and compare costs. I don't think I would be using stainless, just isn't worth the added cost.

thanks all! I decided not to go for the winch after all based on some advice from a local farmer/mechanic about how involved the installation would be.
