Work Clamp for G4B?

Post by Mike Henry »

Hi,

My Hammond G4B came with out the work clamp and I'm starting to think about cobbling up one for holding thin plastic stock when sawing stock in fairly long cuts.

US Patent 2137113 describes the clamp that Hammond sold - would this be a good design for the purpose?

Perhaps something based on teh DeStaCo (sp?) clamps would be more practical.

hammond top clamp

Hello Mike,
The top clamp that you are refering too is great item. If I were to reproduce on, I would duplicate hammonds. It is much more versatile than a destaco type clamp. It quickly adjusts to the width of the stock, than has a cam that applies the proper pressure. The clamp works by sliding up and down two rails paralell to the blade, and very close to the blade also. If you cannot find one, reproducing one would be a great prodject. Let me know what you find out there. I could possible lend you one in order for you to measure it prior to constructing your own. Good luck. Douglas

Hi Douglas,

Sounds like the original is the thing to find and that will probably be tough and/or expensive. I may try to design one from the patent drawings but those aren't dimensioned.

It's very kind of you to offer the loan of yours but I really hate to do that. Is there any chance that you are anywhere near the Chicago area?

I'll look through the patent today and see what would be involved in making one from scratch. Maybe it would be enough to get the dimensions on one key part and scale everything else off that.

Here is a link to a file that shows a diagram of the clamp I am thinking of:

If you get a chance and can read PDF files, would you mind taking a look at it to see if your clamp is the same style?

Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, I have an extra. PM me and we can work out a deal or trade.

I like the clamp, I have found it works best on thicker material- Material thick enough that the top of the upside down "L" contacts the work. It allows you to cut the most amazingly small pieces.

Douglas,

Thanks for the referral. CrzyPete & I are trying to work out something on a spare clamp that he has, but if the deal falls through I'll keep Jerry/SOS Linotype in mind.
