I know the standard blade is meant for cutting lead type bars but will it cut 3/8" aluminum rod without problems?
I got this from Lowes:

Is it OK to cut 3/8" aluminum rod stock with std blade?

You can cut aluminum with a hammond- I do it frequently with one of my saws and a ferrous specific blade. I use a waxy stick lubricant to prevent gumming of the aluminum onto the saw blade.
Round is definitely more dangerous than square because of its propensity to spin, so care is definitely needed. Also, I am unclear of your definition of a standard blade, so would be hesitant to give a thumbs up until I knew what blade you were using and exactly what cuts you were making.
Definitely possible.
