Rust remover?
Has anyone ever tried this product?

Yes I am looking for a magic time saving rust remover. I have a wall of hand tools hoping that this stuff actually works.

I never ordered it, and there was no other experience. Will you be our guinea pig?

I bought two gallons. The results will be in tomorrow afternoon.
I had this notion that i would de oil some parts before they went in the bath but without a sink in the shop that plan quickly changed.
I dunked a variety of parts including some with good paint.
Two gallons does not go that far but if this works I will be well on my way to saving my poor metal lathe. It fell victim to a humidity problem in the new shop. I think I have a handle on the problem but the lathe breaks my heart whenever I look at it.

I got around to reading the literature that came with it and they suggest an overnight soak at 65 deg. I get much colder than that at night so i feel the extra day could help with the thin black film that has replaced the rust. They say the film is expected on high carbon steel and will simply wipe off after a 24H soak. I am going to let the parts soak another night to make up for the low temp.
Bottom line is that the product works, all of the rust is gone.

The black residue did not benefit from the extra day
I ended up touching the face against my slow moving wire wheel to produce a nice fininsh.
I did not touch this part and I am very happy with the results. You can see that the rusted areas have a slight black cast to them.
This is the strange result. THe part of the handwheel that was not fully submerged got etched at the water line. I suppose they mean it when they say to submerge the parts.
All in all it saved lots of time.

Looks good, especially the hand wheel.
Any idea as to what it is? My guess would be a weak phosphoric acid- which is basically what naval jelly is except in a gel form.
Curious if the label says anything. Do they want you to neutralize? I also am curious how it will stand the test of time......
Al in all a very good start.

I did touch the hand wheel to the wire wheel. This is the wheel on my buffer that spins at 1725 and is so mild that I don't wear gloves. I feel it is an acceptable amount of after work on the parts. The Vise did not get touched and the results are night and day.
What is this stuff?
I had a couple of sensory flashes. One of them was phosphoric acid and the other took me back to a photo darkroom.
They say the product has a detergent in it that dissolves mild oil which could explain the dark room smell.
While I would get hits of Phosphoric I don't think that is what is actually happening. For now its a mystery. The product requires no neutralization.
I am going to dunk more and will post the more dramatic successes and failures.

Here are the last bunch of photos. There wont be any more because it is dejavu all over again as Yogi Berra would say.
Overnight in the tank and rust is gone with slight black staining in its place. I keep tossing new tools in there. I am not sure when this madness will stop!
Before
The forstner bits were particularly rusty from drilling holes in sheetrock. Dont ask.
After an overnight soak
Here is a handwheel for crzy straight from the tank
I was most impressed with the forstner bits and this lathe stop. All the rust is gone, even from the hardest to reach places!
