Oliver 285-T Spindle

Post by 300LW »

I've found a machinist willing to make a longer 1.25" spindle for my shaper to replace the original 1.125" spindle but he wants me to send him the main lower spindle to make sure everything is straight and true and the threads match. How is the lower spindle removed? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

The reason I'm going to this trouble is to run an Amana spiral cutterhead with rub collar and the original spindle is an inch too short.

I’ve never been into an Oliver shaper, but you want to be extra careful in there as the bearings are most likely very expensive abec 7’s. I’d be hesitant to go in there for no reason and would prefer to drop the whole machine at his place and let him blue it and fit it in place.
