Hey Hutch. Long time no talk. I heard you were in my old home town of Bristol, Vermont recently. I hope you enjoyed the trip. It's great up there in the fall.

man I am so jealous. I occasionally browse the IRS auctions and it won't let me bid because I have a mac. It drives me crazy. When are they going to stop discrimating against us mac people!

well, have ya ever thought about buying a used P3 500+
for $50 and " joining in on the Game "

IRS is got to be the nicest/most Honest Online Auction House , I've ever come across.

They have been great to me , I've bought almost 20 machines
from them since 02

The Sac slider in the pictures above was bought as a 10 ft slider
when I got it back home and found out it was only a 9 ft slider
and brought that to their attention
My money was refunded in less than 48 hrs , and I got the saw
to keep as the original seller didn't want to come up here
to retieve it .

Hutch, great pics thanks for sharing. The table saw island is cool. Do I count four saws? How is the functionality? I am considering a similar set-up in the new studio, except mine would have a unisaw and delta shaper on one side and a powermatic 66 on the other. I am debating whether the opposing saws will be annoying.

Guzzi, there are ways of getting around this without adding another computer, nektai is the best one to walk you through it. It can be as simple as using a different browser that can mock a pc.

How-DEE, y'all...

Some opinions...

Guzzi - Try the FireFox browser. You can download it for free, and it's gotten me onto a good many 'non-Mac' sites.

Crzy - If you'll recall, the two-saws-facing-one-another was the configuration I had in my old shop (but without the shaper integrated). TOTALLY functional. I'd recommend givin' it a try...

Back to work, now. Ugh...
Nothing is real. Everything is permitted.

Hello to Hutch and HELLO to your machines. Nice work.

Thumb_Basher have you been successful with the FF browser placing bids on the IRS auction site? I tried my best tricks with Camino and got as far as being warned that IRS was trying to send me some packet of Windows stuff. At that point I chickened out and quit my session. I would love to hear that you were successful.

I am about to build my tablesaw island for my new shop and I was curious to benefit from the experience of those who have lived with the table saw beast. How much of a table did you have between the two facing saws? I am planning on about 25" but I would be willing to up that number if you think it is necessary.

hello Pete , yes there are only four saws in that set up ,
there use to be five ( a Hendrick Rasil saw that sat along
side of the SAC slider , but it has been moved over to another
wall
The set up now is a SAC 9 ft slider 12"with scoring
and right beside that sits a General 350 RT 10" ts
on the other end sits a Delta Unisaw RT 10" and right
beside that sits a Powermatic 71 12" LT TS

Having apposing tablesaws is a little tricky but saves on the room
all my tablesaws besides the SAC actually hange from their tops
it's the only way ya can keep all the tops on the same level

I'm in the process of changing the saw set up slighly again

I make kitchen, bookshelves and Fireplace Mantels for a living
it's me and three dogs here
I wouldn't put a shaper in the same set up , you stand in a different
position on that machine

the machine layout changes about every six months or so
when new (old ) machinery is bought
and every machine in here besides the Unisaw /Murphy FBM 11 is the same
"Hutch Green " LOL
I'll pm ya a photo tour of the way it looked last year , its a mess
right now as I'm changing the main dust collector runs

I've had my Unisaw and Delta HD shaper in the same island for the past 8 years and am very fond of it. They share the same biesmeyer and I made a wood fence which clamps to the biesmeyer allowing me to bury a router bit in the fence. My main use of the shaper is as a router table and lately my main use has been as an extension table for the saw- not too much routing going on in my studio.

I am posting a preliminary layout of the new shop in my shop thread.

Hi Nektai : to answer your question

the main table that all the saws sit in is 7ft long
that way the sheets don't fall of the table after they
have passed the blade

Hey Pete: is that a Hendrick in your layout

I did about the same thing , I made scaled paper cutouts of each
machine , and a layout of the shop space on a pc of mdf ,
then it was if this machine can go here, that one can go there
and took about 10 hrs till I was happy with everything .
the saw set up hasn't moved to much , but all the machines around
the ouside walls keep playing "Musical chairs "
I'll throw up some "old" pics showing last yrs layout
it has since changed , but to messy to take new pic's ,since
I'm changing the dust collector/wiring runs still again

many things have changed since these pictures were taken

1. unisaw was returned to original colour
2. Poitras 3000 shaper added
3. Boice Crain 26" scroll saw added
4. 480 V transformer added
5. Ekstrome- Carlson 18 Buffer added
6. almost all the machines allong the outside walls have
changed positions ,and the main saw set up was moved over 20"

the fun never stops

Wow. Do you keep some of the machines on pallets to aid in the constant rearranging? How big is your shop?

I am happy with my progress on paper, but realize the true test is putting everything in place and adjusting from there.....

No hendrick for me- I will try to describe my plans soon.

yes it made them more easy to move around , most have been taken off the pallets now , I like some machines at a higher height than they
are normally. some are almost impossible to get back off the ground
and some just don't drag very easily

I have some machines elavated so the can be positioned to criss cross
each other ,as in the planer and the jointer

all that packed into about 1200 sq ft , and I still have room
to bring in a 17 ft boat on trailer /or my caravan

thought I saw a rail saw in your layout ?

Does that 1200 square foot include the spray booth?

yes it includes the spray booth , this is why layout is SO
important , between the saws and a 4ft wide jointer and a space
left to work on the Caravan
I have about another 150 sq ft of office(6 by 6 ) and the rest
is a show room(9 by 9 ) (down little hallway(8 by 3) as you first come in the door ) as
shown in picture 1, for a total of about 1356 sq ft I believe

the funny thing is ,this is the 3rd shop I've rented and the smallest
and I have more machines than I've previously had in the other two shops
I had to do the paper layout before I rented this one to make sure
that all the machines would fit in
there are 3 more smaller tablesaws still in here somewhere
and a 24" kindt-collins Disk sander ,and a Wysong 306 Side sander,
Dewalt 10" Radial arm saw
that were burried in the for sale pile under the tarps/blankets

But I'm down in the total of machines that I've sold

1. Wysong & Miles 306 Spindle sander
2. Delta 43-503 Over/under shaper/pin router
3. Delta Unisaw Tablesaw
4. Poitras V154 Radial arm saw
5 .General Surface sander
6. Poitras 4800 12" jointer
7. Beaver 4300 8" tablesaw
8. General 350 Tablesaw

It took me awhile to find these, but here are some pictures of a nice lay-up table that I got out of a small cabinet shop in Eastern PA. The table was custom built to accomodate two unisaws. The miter slots were extended into the table using some aluminum channel stock. Two nice rack & pinion fences were added using bar stock that was pre-bored to the fence dimensions. I purchased the table for the fences (they fit the Whitney 77 and 177 saws). The top is laminated sheets of MDF that has been coated with some sort of resin. If I owned a couple of Unisaws, it would be a real nice setup.
