wtpc drill press

Post by Captain KIRK »

Hi I want to purchase a drill press cheap.
Every one always say they are cheap, they come up all the time! But when you want one they are not there!!

I would like a floor drill press that works well!

Does any one know of one for sale? maybe you have been wanting to sell yours for some time now and need a little push to sell it!
Pete the link you sent me did not work
Thanks

Hi Kirk, The delta 15" is a nice press. Especially if the throat depth is suitable to your needs. My favorite of the delta presses is the 17" but that is not what we are looking at.

The 15" has one advantage over the 17" in that it will drill 6" deep.

Looking at the press on eBay, I would say it is a later model. Paint seems to be original, and condition seems to be real clean. The slight rust on the column should clean up no problem- scotch brite pad and some alcohol or wd40.

Questions I would ask.

Does the tire come with it?

Seriously.
I am interested in whether the table is a crank up and down or simply a clamp knob. The clamp knob is Ok if the table is light enough, but otherwise can be a pain.

Also, Ask if the pulleys are in good shape, those diecast multi-groove pulleys are unique to the delta presses, and cost an arm and two legs if you need to buy them from delta.

Also I am assuming it is single phase, you might ask about that.

you can also ask about his reserve, he may be smoking crack as to value. I'd put fair money between $200-$300. Remember this is delta industrial line press, they sell new well over $2k

keep us posted.

Oh, I forgot to add, plan on adding a new chuck, about $65 from msc. That one looks a tad tired, and it will simply be money well spent down the road in your personal happiness.

hi pete, thanks for the help. I just emailed him the questions, and yes I did ask about the tire :D

Why do you think it is a industrial drill press? I did not see that description.

It's an industrial drill press, because that is the line of drill presses it fits into by delta. their non-industrial line all sell for under $1000 new and most if not all are not made in the US.

They made a number of industrial drill presses through the years, this is one.

hey pete the tires are for sale, four of them 22.5 11R $300 still have lots of rubber

The drill press does not have a crank handle, it is single phase

I know this sounds petty but a crank handle can make you want to use your drill press where the other way sucks!!
I did not ask about the price

Do you think I am nuts to pass this up if it is $200 or less?

I wouldn't be too attached. If it is convenient, and cheap, go get it. If not, another will come along.

I love the tire bit

The delta 17"s have the crank, and the table is a might bit heavier.
