new table saw????

Post by nojo »

I have a question for the 'Machine Junkie' community. I need a new table saw, and I fear I've bought the wrong one. This week I got a used Powermatic 72 - clean machine for a fair price. Just not sure it's what I was looking for. What I had wanted was a nice 66 to incorporate into my Unisaw island (the larger 7hp Delta and 9'SCMI slider are elsewhere in the shop). But now I'm thinking I should have held out for the smaller 66.

My senior purchasing advisor (Mr. D) has assured me that the 72 is everything I could want but I'm still not convinced. Being that what I do with the smaller cabinet saws in 'delicate' work, I worry the 72 is overkill.

Any thoughts would be appreciated... :?:

Nojo,

I am one who makes a plan and tries to stick to it. Having said that some of my greatest purchases have been those that were not quite right at the time. They always force big adjustments to the plan which have resulted in many happy and unforeseen outcomes.

If you have space I would suggest putting the 72 into service. I find it invaluable to have a left tilting saw in the shop (even if it is not the model you wanted). The Powermatics not only are the perfect compliment to the right tilting delta's but I feel that the left tilt is the better choice for a heavy duty rip saw. There is the possibility that you may want to keep the 72, add a 66 to the Unisaw island and sell the 7 horse delta. Just a thought.
