How to loose a bunch of money on German Ebay

Post by bw dolan »

I've noticed a better selection of machinery at lower prices on german ebay (ebay.de) and I'm conducting an experiment to determine I can justify the cost of a 10'x20' transatlantic shipping container.

Don't get me wrong, I love American cast iron, especialy Moaks and the mighty Oliver 88. But anyone whose witnessed a Bauerle or an SCM first hand can't deny their appeal.

Here's how the experiment works-

I made a theoretical container load of 10 machines that have sold on german ebay in the last couple weeks. I'll add the cost of the shipping to the combined purchase prices and subtract that from an estimate of what I could get for them stateside and see if the number starts with a - or not.

I'll base my estimate of the machines' stateside value on 2 things-
1 - I'll look for comprable machines on Xfactory.com and the like.
2 - And this is where you fellas come in, I'd be ever so gratefull if you'd share your expert junkie opinion as to the value of any of the items.

In any case you might get a kick out of taking a look. Use http://babelfish.altavista.com/ if you want a translation. Oh, and mm x .039=inches, kilowattsx1.3=hp, and kilosx2.2=pounds

This is definitely some sick thinking, sick thinking that we need more of here.

It certainly opens a number of questions. First would be whether you would be able to coordinate the whole move without going to Germany. Next would be tariffs and import fees. Third would be whether you are trying to buy them for your own use or trying to flip them for profit. Lastly would be the accuracy of xfactory pricing- I find it exceedingly high.

I don't know if it is possible to pull this off at a major profit, but it would certainly be an epic move.

I really know nothing about the value of euro iron, but will do my best to contribute anything of value.

My girlfriend's sister and her husband live in Germany with the military, so I could call on them to do a little leg work on my behalf but
I figure i'd have to go to Germany at least the first time to make connections and learn how things are done over there.

The 16% VAT is included in the purchase prices, so far that's the only tax I'm counting on.

Xfactory pricing is definitely high. I suspect that nobody actually pays the "sticker price". I think a two pronged remedy is in order.

1- I'll multiply all xfactory prices by, say, .75 to correct for the fact that they're dreaming.

2- I'll diversify by finding comparable machines at other retailers or, better still, from other individuals who, like myself, can’t afford to hold inventory for long. Which brings us to the biggest question of all – namely –

Just what the hell do I hope to accomplish here? Several things-

1- To provide quality machinery at fair prices to the small-time shops that still use simple, manualy operated machines. This benifits me in two ways-

A. By helping small shops I’m helping to preserve the craft and keep the people who were just born to make things from becoming assistants to CNC panel saws and routers.
B. Servicing and parts fabrication for the machines I sell could provide steady work for the machine shop which is to comprise one part of my business empire.

2- To get top quality machines for the cabinet shop which is to comprise the primary part of my business empire. My old boss used to say he ran a production millwork shop so that he could skim the best lumber for himself. The concept is the same.

3- To cavort across Europe and get my drool on tons of iron.

If I managed to accomplish any 2 of these 3 things without going bankrupt I’d consider the whole venture a success.

Which brings us back to data collection. Who’s more qualified than you guys to tell me what an American consumer of machinery would pay for this stuff? I’m not asking you to go through all 10, just pick one or two and give me your opinion.

I promise I won’t come back and blame you if you’re wrong.

thanks - B
May you die with all 10.

Hello B
what an exciting idea. Looking ot the items you listed does indeed spur some interst. I would quickly purchase many of the items at the purchase you quoted. But germany is a long way away. The jointer and bandsaw is definaletly priced low, and I feel you could resell a good bit higher. I am not that familiar with shapers. As for understanding US values, look ar IRS. They would also be a possible solution to selling the machines in the US. How about getting in touch with a used equipment dealer, and buy at prices below ebay values? Also a lot less leg work, when all the machines are in one builing in Germany, waiting for the container. Keep the thoughts coming
