my new planer

Post by mr douglas t »

Picked up the new planer today. Loading was very easy. A little hyraulic power goes a long way. I spent about 2 hours on the planer after I got it into the shop. It is in even better condition than I thought. I am very happy with it. below are some photos. I will switch the planers tommorow if I have time.

Mr douglas we are going to miss you in the Yates club. That looks like a very nice planer but I think it would look even better in blue and yellow. Are you going to paint it or use it as is?

The yates is out and the new beast is in. Moved the Oliver Jointer 4" forward, and the two nested together well. There is no need to paint. It is in very good condition as is. I cleaned the feed rolls, waxed the table and greased the gears. I will plug it in tommorow and give you a performance update along with some photos. Along with the yates out, I now have an 8" oliver jointer that has no home? Do I sell it, store it in the loft, or find a new place for it?

why do you have an 8 " and a 4" joinetr. i would keep the 8 and get rid of the 4. I use my 8 for edging a 4" seems more decorative than anything. put it on the lawn as sculpture.

The 18" yates is out, and the beast is in place. I started adjusting and setting the rolls. What a beautiful thing to work on. The cutter head is the best and easiest thing I have ever set knives on. Socket screws push wedges up that tighten the blade, no knuckle busting jib srews that are rounded over by thin wrenches. The height of the knife is set thru another hole that you insert a tool into and turn, thus pushing up the bottem of the blade. They dial right in. Re set 4 knives in record time. Now setting the bed and feed rolls. They were way out. Bed feed rolls were below the table on the front, and one side of the rear bed rolls wer up 1/16". Infeed roll was 1/2" below the knives. All adjustments are clear with large fine thread set screws that dial right in. A pleasure to work on so far.

It sounds like you are close to making the first cut. What are you waiting for?

Let me know how the jointing/grinding goes. Should only need to joint the newly set knives. Feel free to contact me back channel.

Our week end guests have gone and I got back out to the shop. Finished setting the rolls and ran the first board. It runs great. Very smooth cut with a small 2 " snipe that goes away when you lift lightly on the board as it exits. No snipe on the front. I have yet to joint or grind the knives. I will post again after I do.

I stood in front of this beast this weekend. Got to check it out in person. I am impressed by the construction and beautiful massive gears under the hood. I was also surprised that the massive hood is quite liftable as it it sheet metal not cast iron- i had been wondering how that thing was removable by mere mortals like myself.

All and all a nice shop addition.
